PIONEER PAPER CO. BUYS JASPER QUARRIES

A deed filed for record in the office of the County Recorder of Mariposa County, the first of the week, shows the transfer of the Jasper Rock quarries from Herbert J. Keim to the Pioneer Paper Company of Los Angeles. The property is located in Section 19, Twp. 6 S. Range 16 E. being on the Merced river near Horseshoe Bend.

During the past several years the property has been worked by Mr. Keim and many thousands of tons of fine jasper have been shipped by him to the California markets. There are six varieties of jasper mined at the quarries -- red, green, chocolate, purple and variegated. It is said to be one of if not the finest deposits of jasper in the United States.

The Pioneer Paper Company which has taken over the property, has used the crushed jasper in making the finest grade of roofing paper. It is also used for many other purposes.

Information as to the intentions of the new owners has not been made public, but no doubt they will develop the property extensively and make large shipments of the crushed ore to their manufacturing plant in Los Angeles.
